What is the Islamic (Hijri) Calendar?
The Hijri calendar is a purely lunar calendar consisting of 12 months of 29 or 30 days, totaling 354 or 355 days per year — about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar year. It begins from the Hijrah (migration) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. Each month starts when the new crescent moon is sighted, though most calendars use astronomical calculation.
The Hijri year is denoted as AH (Anno Hegirae). To convert: AH ≈ (Gregorian year − 622) × (354.367/365.2425), which gives an approximate value. The exact AH year for any date depends on which Hijri month has been reached. This tool uses the Kuwaiti algorithm for Gregorian-to-Hijri conversion.

How is the Hijri year (AH) calculated?
AH = Anno Hegirae, counted from the Hijrah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in 622 CE. Since the Hijri year (~354.37 days) is shorter than the Gregorian year (~365.24 days), the AH year number increases slightly faster. For a rough conversion: AH ≈ (Gregorian year − 622) × 0.970. This tool uses the Kuwaiti algorithm for precise date-to-date conversion.
Why do Islamic dates shift every year?
The Hijri calendar is purely lunar (12 months × 29.53 days = 354.37 days), while the Gregorian calendar is solar (365.24 days). The ~11-day difference means each Islamic event shifts ~11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year. Ramadan in 2025 starts around March 1, but by 2035 it will start around mid-February.
Is this based on moon sighting or calculation?
This tool uses astronomical calculation (the Kuwaiti algorithm), not physical moon sighting. Most countries now use calculation for civil purposes, though some still rely on local moon sighting committees. Actual dates may differ by 0–1 days depending on your region and local authority.
